Puccini’s masterpiece. Passion and cruelty, love and rebellion are the ingredients that make Tosca a timeless, disturbing and controversial opera since its debut at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on January 14, 1900.
The fall of the ephemeral Roman Republic and the restoration of papal power in June 1800 are the backdrop to the overwhelming love story between the singer Floria Tosca and the painter Mario Cavaradossi. Puccini’s energetic melody becomes a narrative element in a fast-paced story, rich in scenic effects with strong colors and realistic details: it thus ideally dismisses the nineteenth century and welcomes the vigorous innovative thrusts of the century that is beginning.
