Anželika Cholina has created a production that theatrically highlights the dramatic tensions of Tolstoy’s novel: Anna’s bored existence alongside her husband Karenin, whom she does not love; her fateful infatuation with the officer Vronsky and a love lived openly; her estrangement from her beloved son Serëza; and the condemnation of Moscow and St Petersburg high society. Until the tragic outcome, driven by remorse, pain and shame, beneath a train at a lonely station. Amidst thrilling pas de deux, dramatic solos and marvellous ensemble scenes, the novel’s many storylines intertwine in parallel throughout the production. Above all, the mature love between Kitti, Vronsky’s rejected fiancée, and Levin, who has always adored her and will eventually win her over. Cholina brings this great classic novel to the stage through her unique, highly original dance theatre, which combines classical ballet and contemporary dance, with the most intense expressiveness in the eyes and on the faces of her performers.
