The contemptuous princess Turandot, to give herself in marriage, submits to her suitors three riddles: only those who will be able to solve them can have her hand; on the contrary, those who fail in the challenge will be executed. In front of the princess come Timur – the old Tatar king overthrown – and his son Calaf, determined to try the arduous enterprise. Calaf manages to solve the riddle, and Turandot falls into despair, forced to betray the oath of chastity. Calaf will declare himself ready to die if he can guess his name before dawn. The princess, willing to do anything to know his name, tortures Timur’s faithful slave, Liù, who does not reveal the solution and takes her own life. Turandot, upset and now attracted to Calaf, gets kissed by him who whispers her name. Finally Calaf and Turandot will show themselves to the crowd together and the identity of the mysterious prince will be revealed: “his name is Love”
