Written by Edoardo Erba and directed by Serena Sinigaglia, The Merry Wives of Windsor is adapted, cut and mounted with lashings of irony, accompanied with songs, played and sung live by Verdi’s Falstaff. On stage Mrs. Page, Mrs. Ford, the young Anne Page and the servant Quickly, who provide speech for the male characters, absent on stage yet still very present: husbands, lovers, and, above all, the eldest, not only in size, Falstaff. With him, everything begins and with him, everything ends. Without Falstaff, there would be no fun for the Page and Ford ladies, who, like the “Desperate Housewives,” are middle-aged, middle-class, bored and slightly bigoted women, with established routines, absent husbands and dormant desires.
