In 1935 De Filippo and Pirandello crowned their artistic collaboration with The New Suit-L’Abito Nuovo, which was staged in 1937 at the Teatro Manzoni in Milan. At the centre, the figure of the clerk Michele Crispucci, forced to choose whether to follow the path that fate indicates to him or lose his integrity. The lucid insanity that governs Crispucci’s choices makes him a sort of contemporary hero who fights against the obsessive attachment of man to things. A harsh, sharp text for its time, today however, illuminatingly relevant.
