The Socrate Widow is a written masterpiece much like all Franca Valeri’s works. Theatre being made of speech and moreover of perfect speech, with its rhythm, pauses and cadences like a musical score, the directing work must be light to accompany the interpreter in a non-invasive but supportive way like a musician is accompanied in a solo.

Stefania Bonfadelli

Inspired by The death of Socrates by the Swiss writer Friedrich Durrenmatt, it is set in the antique store of Santippe, the philosopher’s wife handed down by historians as one of the most unbearable women of ancient times. “I was intrigued by the idea of debunking this legend that Santippe was just a kind of shrew – explained Franca Valeri – I make her a wife like many others, with a daily life full of ups and downs, an intelligent woman who also sees many of her husband’s defects “.
