Where, if not at the theatre – the place of dissimulation par excellence – can the most risky of tricks succeed? I left Maria Amelia free to invent her ‘Marple’, and this Marple is much closer to that of Agatha Christie’s first novels: more malevolent, rural and unpredictable, but always equipped with the sharp logic that allows her to get to the heart of the events. Like a Shakesperian fool, Miss Marple accentuates with nimbleness the ridiculous passions of which no one is immune, showing with brazen frankness, human nature for what it really is, without letting ourselves be duped by the masks we wear to hide ourselves from the eyes of others.
